Workshop on AI, Knowledge, and Democracy
University of Nairobi | February 2–4, 2027
The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) has drawn philosophical attention from a range of perspectives: its effects on knowledge production; its consequences for democracy; the possibility of machine cognition. Large language models (LLMs), now widely used in place of traditional search engines, are of particular interest. Their use raises questions about the reliability of their outputs, their epistemic effects on users, and their political implications. What becomes of authority, testimony, and trust when machine-generated responses mediate access to information? And how might democratic deliberation change when AI systems structure public discourse? This workshop will explore these and related questions, with special attention paid to the consequences of these emerging technologies for us as inquirers, knowers, and citizens in digital democracies.
